inspection_passfailFirst Article Inspection is a process whereby a manufacturer and a supplier working together verify the ability of the supplier to produce a part and meet the production needs of the purchasing manufacturer.

The verb “first article inspection” is the act of comparing a physical sample part with the specifications against which it was designed.

FAI standards call for the proper documentation and verification in detail of production methods including tooling, all the elements of development, material specifications and testing processes and measurements.

FAI serves as the record for company and governmental required records. Typically the more complex the part the more complex the FAI process and documentation will be.

At a minimum, the basic information in an FAI document needs to include:

  • Dimensional Measurement
  • Specification Requirements
  • Product Name and Number
  • Detailed Statistical Analysis
  • Design Characteristics
